The Ministry of Planning is proceeding with a sustainable development plan until 2030, the main objective of which is to fight poverty, while it referred to a set of other goals, policies and plans for each of them have been developed.
The ministry launched the first strategy in 2010 to 2014, while the second continues for 2022. Through these strategies, the ministry aims to reduce poverty rates in the country to acceptable rates.
In an interview with Al-Mada, the spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, said that "about two years ago, the ministry launched the sustainable development plan until 2030."
Al-Hindawi added, "The sustainable development plan includes working to achieve a set of goals, foremost of which is the fight against poverty, as well as a set of other goals for which policies and plans have been developed for each one of them."
He pointed out, "The ministry is still working within the poverty reduction strategy for the period from 2018-2022, and preparations have been started to develop a new strategy to combat poverty in the country from 2023-2027, in addition to other policies in order to achieve sustainable development for 2030."
According to the last statistic before the pandemic, which was published in February 2020, the poverty rate had reached 20%, equivalent to 8 million Iraqis who were below the poverty line, but it returned to decline after the procedures for lifting the curfew and returning work and activities to their normal state.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Planning stated that "the sustainable development plan is classified within the five-year development plans and the short, medium and long-term strategic plans."
He continued, "There is still no tendency to issue or legislate a birth control law, but rather work is underway to spread a social culture and awareness of the need to organize the family through spacing and organizing births in a way that leads to fewer births."
Al-Hindawi pointed out that "the size of the family in Iraq has witnessed a decrease during the last 10 years, and this is due to families' understanding of the need for family planning and reducing the number of births in general."
He pointed out that "according to the current rates of population growth in Iraq, annually the population increases by nearly one million people, and by 10 million people within 10 years and reaching 100 million people after 6 decades," adding that "the continued growth on the current situation at a rate of 6/2 It is expected that growth rates will decline in the coming years.”
Regarding unemployment in the country, Al-Hindawi spoke, saying that “the issue of unemployment is related to development and economic aspects, and according to statistics, the unemployment rate has reached 14 percent across the country.”
He went on to say, "The ministry's five-year development plan, as well as Iraq's plan for sustainable development for 2030, and the strategy for developing the private sector, are all outputs that lead to the provision of new job opportunities that accommodate the population increase and graduates who enter the labor market."
In turn, economic affairs specialist Dia Al-Mohsen said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the tools by which the poverty rate is reduced and the economy is addressed are available, but poor government planning and reluctance to implement prevent the advancement of the economic situation."
Al-Mohsen believes, "The government is unable to implement the plans it presents, and the evidence for this is the change in the exchange rate that harmed large segments of society, increased poverty and high inflation."
The economic affairs specialist adds, "The economic situation can be better than it is if there is strong political will and seriousness in developing the economy."
The Iraqis have faced a year full of economic challenges, and fears are growing of a delay in voting on the 2022 budget bill, which in turn may exacerbate their financial and living crises.
