By adopting modern methods of irrigation and fertilization.. Wasit succeeds in cultivating the famous broccoli plant.. and achieves high productivity

Wasit / Jabbar Bechai
A researcher in Wasit Governorate succeeded in planting broccoli for the first in the governorate by 811 plants in the Horticulture Department of Kut Municipality. The weight of the tablet of the plant is 1200 grams.
Specialists in agricultural affairs considered the success of plant cultivation in the province as one of the modern agricultural experiments that should be taken care of and work to expand the areas that will be planted in the future, as it is a plant with high nutritional value and medical importance, in addition to the economic aspect that it achieves for the farmer. Researcher Allawi says, "I conducted a practical experiment to grow broccoli by planting 811 plants after preparing the appropriate land and dividing it into research units with 36 units, each 7.5 m wide, and 18 plants were planted in each unit on a total area of 500 square meters." He stressed that "the cultivation of broccoli in Wasit is one of the modern experiences in the central and southern regions of Iraq."
He explained, "The method of cultivation was used in the form of lines after dividing the land allocated for cultivation and adopted the drip irrigation method. The total amount of water used was ten thousand liters for all stages of germination, while one irrigation needed to be 100 thousand liters if it was cultivated by traditional methods and using tourist irrigation." Pointing out that this method also achieved an abundance of irrigation water, and this is one of the necessities that should be taken care of and adopted, especially with the great water scarcity that the country suffers in general and Wasit Governorate, which lost this season about 50 percent of its agricultural plan.
He pointed out that "the plant's maturity period was record, and the cultivated kernels gave a high productivity, as the weight of one disc reached 1200 grams, which is a large amount recorded for the first time within the frameworks and research experiments in Iraq."
And he indicated that one of the reasons for the success of his agricultural experience and reaching high levels of production is the adoption of modern methods of fertilization according to four scientifically calculated concentrations according to the stages of germination, as the total quantities of fertilizer used reached 10 kg, while in the traditional methods this area needs 500 kg of fertilizers, and thus the rationalization rate was not It is not only in the irrigation water, but even in the fertilizer used.”
Al-Wasiti called on farmers in the governorate to “attention to planting the broccoli plant, which belongs to the Crusader family, because it is not tiring for the farmer and is resistant to insects, diseases and fungi, in addition to being fast growing. More profits for the farmer than other plants that are grown in a large way.”
For his part, agricultural engineer Muhammad Ghanem, responsible for the Gardens and Parks Unit in the municipality, said that “broccoli is a vegetable plant that belongs to the cabbage family, which also includes cabbage, watercress, turnip, radish, and flower. It is a plant that has many medicinal benefits.”
He explained that "broccoli is characterized by being free of fat and containing some powerful chemicals to enhance immunity and combat a number of diseases. It is always recommended to be eaten by middle-aged people who are upwards, as it helps in the face of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and combating cancer as well."
And he indicated that "the success of cultivating broccoli in Wasit would open the horizons towards expanding its cultivation in the coming period, and this could help meet the needs of the local market if an appropriate plan was developed to expand its cultivation by the agricultural people after the success of its cultivation in research, especially since its selling prices are very appropriate." Therefore, it brings good financial returns to the farmer.”
Broccoli is a form of cabbage, native to the eastern Mediterranean and Central Asia, and the broccoli plant contains many nutrients, vitamins and minerals important for human health.
Broccoli includes a lot of nutrients, such as, vitamin K, vitamin C, iron, potassium, and natural fibers, and also contains many proteins, unlike other vegetables and plants, as it also contains 90% of water, and 7% of carbohydrates. 3% protein, very few calories and fat free.
