Today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Water Resources announced the establishment of meters that count the quantities consumed, while specifying the advantages of closed irrigation.
Aoun Diab, a consultant to the Ministry of Water Resources, said in a statement to the official agency, that “managing water and rationalizing its use in a rational manner gives good results, as water conservation is a common matter for everyone,” noting that “water losses are due to the transportation process, which takes place from long distances that reach up to 50 km in order to irrigate agricultural lands, and if it is unlined, large quantities will be lost in leaching and evaporation.”
He added, "The ministry issued a decision to use the closed irrigation method to deliver water to the lands, which depends on pipes," noting that "the role of the farmer will be limited to managing water inside the field in terms of irrigation to conserve water."
He added, "There are meters that have been set up to know the quantities of water consumed, in addition to directing the Design Center to prepare designs for any new project without referring to the old ways," noting that "the ministry has a project in Dhi Qar Governorate, near Batha, with a limit of 10,000 dunams with complete designs that will be started." It will be financed by the Japanese loan, in addition to some support from a number of organizations.”

He added, "The ministry has implemented an area of 10,000 acres in the Karbala governorate on the Husseiniya project, and it is implemented in the form of a network of pipes that are currently being used and that have valves where they are opened and closed according to the needs of the farmer, which saves large amounts of water instead of wasting it," stressing that "there is a decision to adopt Designs for all of Iraq.
He stressed that "there are designs, including a pioneering project in Basra Governorate, for the purpose of securing a palm plantation project in the sea region," noting that "climate changes are not easy to calculate because the rains are fluctuating in the regions of the country, in addition to that Iraq has lost after the establishment of dams and reservoirs by countries. Neighborhood has water flowing, which has clearly decreased, in addition to the expectation that water will be short of more than these quantities.”
