    The President of Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, stressed the importance of protecting the freedom and rights of journalists, noting that the conditions of women journalists inside and outside their institutions are “a matter of concern” and efforts should be expanded to improve their work environment and combat harassment.

    The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met with the staff of the Metro Center for Press Freedoms, and the center's coordinator, Rahman Gharib, said: "All members of the Metro Center presented their observations and proposals to the President of the Kurdistan Region, who answered everyone."

    In a statement to Rudaw Media Network, on Tuesday (1 March 2022), Rahman Gharib said that the President of the Kurdistan Region stressed the importance of implementing laws on freedom of journalists and access to information as a condition for the progress of the democratic process, expressing his support for Metro Center and all journalists.

    The coordinator of the Metro Center for Press Freedoms indicated that Nechirvan Barzani looks with interest at the efforts of the Metro Center and civil society organizations aimed at increasing the recognition of human rights and activating the process of oversight over the institutions of the Kurdistan Region.

    Gharib, added that the President of the Kurdistan Region said that "the people of Kurdistan have struggled and revolted for freedoms and human rights, and we must preserve these freedoms and rights and we should not look with a hostile eye to the reports of organizations that monitor these areas."

    The conditions of women constituted another focus of discussion between the President of the Kurdistan Region and the staff of the Metro Center, and about this, Rahman Gharib said that the President of the Kurdistan Region indicated that the conditions of women journalists inside and outside their institutions, as reported by Metro and the Journalists Syndicate, are a matter of concern and efforts should be expanded to improve their work environment. and combating oppression.

    The President of the Kurdistan Region announced his support for the Metro Center and for activists and journalists, and said that he would provide all facilities to organizations and journalists.

    Rahman Gharib noted that the President of the Kurdistan Region assured them that he would not support any law that contradicts the Press Law and the Law on Access to Information.

    The coordinator of the Metro Center stated that they made many demands to the President of the Kurdistan Region, “and all the demands were to serve the public interest. We see that the public interest and the interest of Kurdistan lies in expanding freedoms so that Kurdistan is protected.”
