    Economy News-Baghdad
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program said on Monday that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change, which calls for the need to confront the consequences of the crisis.
The two UN organizations stated in a report that Iraq is one of the countries in the world most affected by the consequences of climate change, which means that the country's agriculture may be subject to extreme weather in summer and winter.
The report quoted the representative of the World Food Program in Iraq, Ali Reza Qureshi, as saying that the consequences of climate change will affect the poorest groups, amid dwindling agricultural holdings of farmers.
The report called on the Iraqi government and the competent authorities to adopt smart agricultural and irrigation systems that are in line with the risks posed to the agricultural sector in the country due to climate change.
Iraq relies mainly on securing water on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and their tributaries, all of which originate from Turkey and Iran and converge near the city of Basra in southern Iraq to form the Shatt al-Arab, which flows into the Arabian Gulf.
Iraq has been suffering for years from a continuous decline in water revenues across the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the water scarcity crisis has also been exacerbated by the low amounts of rain falling in the country over the past years.
