Saudi newspaper: The US ambassador has reached understandings with Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani to cancel the "law criminalizing normalization"
Shafaq News/ The Saudi newspaper Okaz reported on Thursday that secret understandings took place between the new Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, and the American ambassador in Baghdad, Alina Romanowski, during several meetings over the past weeks.
The Saudi newspaper wrote; "According to the information, the US ambassador asked Al-Sudani to work to stop the missile attacks on US military bases and her country's embassy in the Green Zone in central Baghdad, in exchange for improving the image of the leaders of the armed factions that launched these attacks and who fall under the umbrella of the US administration's "coordinating framework" coalition ".
Okaz quoted private sources as saying that "the American ambassador promised the Iraqi prime minister to improve relations between Washington and Baghdad if the law criminalizing normalization with Israel was repealed, a law that was voted on by members of the House of Representatives unanimously prior to the resignation of the Sadrist movement's representatives from Parliament."
The newspaper continued; "Al-Sudani met with some leaders of the "coordinating framework" whose armed factions are launching attacks on American interests in Iraq, including the US embassy, presenting them with American demands, but the meeting, according to the sources, ended without reaching anything."
According to the Saudi newspaper, Iraqi sources informed Okaz about the new prime minister's attempts to exert financial pressure on the budgets of the parliament presidency and the budgets of other files to pass bills that the government will refer to the parliament soon, including a bill abolishing the criminalization of normalization with Israel.
The newspaper quoted a source close to the Sadrist movement that "the movement's leader Muqtada al-Sadr warned against any attempts to repeal the law criminalizing normalization with Israel, vowing that his movement would not stand idly by, even if it required returning to the street again."
The newspaper pointed out that "not a week has passed since the start of the actual work of the new government that was formed after about a year of paralysis and political blockage. The adviser to the Iraqi president, Amir al-Kinani, expected yesterday (Wednesday), that the Sudanese would encounter the obstacle of the interests of the political forces during his work."
The newspaper quoted Al-Kinani as saying in a statement to the Forum of the Middle East Research Institute (Miri): "The agreement to form the government will not last long because interests will govern. He considered that the defect in Iraq does not lie in the constitution, but in its failure to implement it."
