Baghdad / Obelisk: Class differences in Iraqi society are widening, due to the expansion of the wealthy class, the salary scale that allows the holders of positions and influence, huge salaries compared to ordinary employees, as well as the general public that does not originally enjoy any government income.
The phenomenon of class differences is clearly observed when the car convoys of politicians and businessmen drive on the roads that embrace the needy families whose children seek to reach those cars to ask for help.
And the citizen Abu Ammar, who lives in a dilapidated house on the outskirts of the capital, Baghdad, says: We feel pain when we see the extravagance of money on election campaigns and others.
Political forces usually target poor areas for the purpose of propaganda, which indicates that those forces know very well the downtrodden classes in society while wasting billions.
At a time when the features of the wealthy class's control over the economy began to appear in Iraqi society, represented by politicians, businessmen, and merchants who have special relations with senior officials, the downtrodden class suffers from hard living, as the average monthly income of its members does not exceed one hundred dollars.
Between the two classes, since 2003, a class of junior employees appeared, who were able, thanks to monthly salaries, to improve their economic condition, but they live in fear of inflation and high prices, whose signs have begun to appear.
The retirement law causes huge differences between the salaries of retirees and employees
Clearly, the manifestations of extravagance are monitored in nightclubs, and velvet societies transmitted by leaked videos, in which huge sums of money are spent, and employees, senior officials, army and police officers, have become symbols of the aristocracy along with influential merchants and businessmen.
Economic researcher Rahim al-Asadi confirms that the economic gap between the rich and the poor has widened greatly, and a very wealthy class has appeared in all Iraqi cities, which owns villas, land and luxury cars. And he continues: The social problem seems deeper when you see a huge mansion next to which is a small hut or a tin house.
And in a video obtained by the obelisk, the owner of a wooden cart appeared trying to pass the many expensive shaded cars that were parked in front of a huge villa in Baghdad, which explains the great social differences.
Economic researcher Qanbar al-Mufidi believes that redistributing wealth among citizens and reinvesting it in housing and employment projects, imposing high taxes on wealth owners, and eliminating corruption of political and economic elites is sufficient to reduce class differences.
Among the proposed measures, an exceptional tax on wealth and a tax on dividends, and an increase in taxes on labor and capital incomes for the very wealthy.
Likewise, the salary scale is considered the biggest cause of creating class differences in Iraqi society, as most Iraqis with low incomes believe that the Iraqi state and its laws encourage the spread of this dangerous phenomenon.
Former MP Hoshyar Abdullah called on the relevant parliamentary committees, earlier, to reduce the salaries and allowances of parliamentarians and those with special degrees, explaining that class differences had reached their peak.
The academic, Rifaat al-Bayati, talks about the importance of reconsidering the salaries of all officials, fixing only one salary, and canceling all protections, because whoever enacted the huge salaries and protections law is concerned with thwarting the democratic experience and creating a special bourgeois class.
