Today, Saturday, the leader in the coordination framework, Turki Al-Atbi, revealed the start of an investigation into smuggling operations on the border with Iran, east of Diyala.
Al-Atbi told (Baghdad Today) that "information has been reported in the past weeks about the presence of smuggling on the border strip between Iraq and Iran through the Kuma Sinek area, east of Qazaniyeh district (97 km east of Baquba)," pointing out that "the investigation has actually begun to find out the truth about what is happening." With so much information."
He added, "The Sudanese government lingered on the project to convert the Korsink region into a third border crossing with Iran, in light of the submission of many requests in this direction in the past months, pending its study and the statement of economic feasibility," noting that "it was instructed to tighten procedures within this region to prevent any smuggling attempts." for various goods and materials.
He pointed out, "It is not possible to open any new crossing without official permission from Baghdad, as it is a federal prerogative."
The border strip between Iraq and Iran extends to about 1,430 kilometers, starting from the city of Basra to ending with mountain peaks at the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and there are legitimate border crossings that regulate economic and security relations, and other illegal ones that Baghdad complained about for causing the smuggling of goods and commodities years ago, and the negative impact in the Iraqi economy.
And despite the economic repercussions for Iran due to the sanctions; Its exports of goods and services to Iraq amounted to $9 billion annually in the past three years.
Economic statistics show that Iranian exports to neighboring Iraq have increased continuously over the past ten years, as Iran's non-oil exports to Iraq in 2008 amounted to about $7.2 billion, and in 2019 they reached about $9 billion, and Iranian exports to Iraq accounted for In terms of value, the year 2008 accounted for about 15% of Iran's total exports, while 22% of total Iranian exports during the year (2020) went to Iraq.
