    Baghdad - Nas
The head of the Human Rights Committee in the House of Representatives, Arshad al-Salihi, confirmed that "mafias" have influence in Iraqi prisons, and most of their inmates have been sentenced on charges related to drugs, and that they are active in taboo trade behind the walls.

Al-Salhi said in statements to Qatari-funded media, followed by “NAS” (February 15, 2023): “We made surprise visits to a number of prisons, and we found mafias that have influence divided between those who introduce drugs and distribute them to drug users, those who sell and buy (extort) prisoners, and a third party. It is concerned with food, and another specializes in introducing mobile phones and Internet networks.

He added, "We found "VIP" halls through which prisoners paid a bribe to provide amenities and complete services. We also found "VIP" halls through which prisoners, regardless of their background, paid a bribe amounting to 300 thousand dinars ($200) per month to provide amenities. And full services. Also, in some prisons, sums are demanded from the families of prisoners to allow them to meet with them, although it is a right that is supposed to be done periodically and according to the laws in force, and this is clear corruption that should not be allowed to continue.”

The head of the Human Rights Committee pointed out: "After the visit, we prepared a report, and we are waiting to host the Minister of Justice, Khaled Shawani, and the prison directors in the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, and in light of the results of the hosting, recommendations will be submitted to the Prime Minister."
