While the Ministry of Agriculture confirms that the number of foot-and-mouth disease infections among livestock and settlers in the country does not exceed two heads only, a veterinary expert stressed that the disease, which spread four months ago, has caused the death of thousands of livestock so far in several governorates of the country.
The Director General of the Veterinary Department at the Ministry, Dr. Thamer Habib Hamza Al-Khafaji, said in a statement to Al-Sabah: Foot-and-mouth disease is a viral disease that affects livestock, and it activates at low temperatures, and the virus dies by cooking meat and freezing, indicating that the problem of the disease is limited to the heavy losses it causes. For livestock breeders, and there is no treatment to eliminate the virus that causes the disease, but it depends on giving the animals antibiotics and following up on topical treatment in the mouth and udders by washing them with soap and water and sterilizing them with antiseptics and ointments.
Regarding the number of infections currently occurring among livestock in the country, he stated that they do not exceed two cases only, indicating that addressing the disease lies in vaccinating livestock periodically when the disease appears and collecting samples from them before and after vaccination to check on the immunity of animals, preventing the import of live animals, and allowing the import of frozen meat. Animal products, dairy products and dairy products from countries that are free from disease. For his part, the specialized veterinary expert, Dr. Bassem Najm Al-Adadh, revealed in a statement to "Al-Sabah": that foot-and-mouth disease, which has been endemic in Iraq for decades, has caused the deaths of thousands of buffalo heads for four months now, especially in the southern governorates, including the marshes, and has caused drought. the speed of its spread among them.
