Water resources: The revenues of the rain wave are limited compared to the emptiness of the reservoirs

Baghdad / Firas Adnan
The Ministry of Water Resources stated that preliminary estimates of the amounts of rain that fell in the last wave amounted to two billion cubic meters, but it stated that these quantities are considered limited compared to the reservoir void, revealing that the winter agricultural plan reached 6 million and 500 thousand dunums, pointing out that Iraq does not have Problem with drinking water and other domestic uses.
"The wave of rain that fell in Iraq was beneficial and fruitful," said ministry spokesman Khaled Shamal.
And Shamal continued, "The period during which it rained, which ranged from two to three days, achieved good revenues, but it is considered limited compared to the storage space."
He pointed out, "The competent authorities can determine the quantities of discharges that he stored during the next two days, which we expect to approach two billion cubic meters, but we cannot give a specific number."
And Shamal said, "The rains fell in all governorates, and those that occurred in the areas north of Samarra towards the Turkish and Syrian borders can be stored."
And he stressed, “Dealing with rain is as an achieved revenue, part of which is paid to lakes and rivers, and the other is used to increase drainage, revive the marshes, and improve the environment of the Shatt al-Arab.”
Shamal stressed, "The rains that fall away from the riverbeds help revitalize pastoral areas and increase green spaces."
And he added, "The torrents that came from eastern Iraq across the border with the Iranian side were useful, part of which pushed directly to the Tigris River, and the other to revive the marshes adjacent to the border between the two countries."
And Shamal went on to say, “The visit that Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani made to Turkey made the water file sovereign, and it was agreed to double the water releases towards the Tigris River, and this matter has been initiated since the twenty-third day of last month.”
He explained, "Iraq does not have a problem with drinking water and other domestic uses, because we are looking at water in order to secure the summer or winter agricultural plan."
And Shamal said, "The winter agricultural plan has been completed successfully, after it was one million and 500 thousand dunums, but what has been implemented is 6 million and 500 thousand dunums, and it has been relying on rain and drainage provided by the ministry."
He stressed, "The agricultural plan is based on three important indicators, the first is the revenues in the storage, the second is what is achieved from surface water through rain, and the third is water imports."
And Shamal continues, “The government stressed the need to follow modern methods of irrigation, and considered it a condition for obtaining subsidies, because these mechanisms provide 70% of the water.”
And he believes that “the application of this mechanism needs an important role for informing with awareness, education and guidance, with the need to motivate farmers to implement it by providing means of support, and for the transgressor to have a feeling that his act is an abuse of public money.”
And Shamal concluded, that “the water drainage networks are the commitment of the Municipality of Baghdad in the capital, and the municipal authorities in the governorates, and most likely the rain water is drained to the nearest waterway, whether it is a river or an irrigation channel, but we need to strengthen the infrastructure in order to contribute to Rainwater treatment and optimal investment.
For his part, Adel Al-Mukhtar, a specialist in water affairs, stated that “Iraq suffers year after year from a decline in storage, until today it is at its lowest level.”
Al-Mukhtar continued, "The water situation is still critical, because we are on the verge of a drinking water crisis, with indications that we will enter a harsh summer."
He pointed out that "all the rains that fall on Iraq are used, whether in the winter or summer season."
Al-Mukhtar said, “The rains that fell in the first three months of this year were estimated by the ministry at one billion cubic meters, a quarter of which is from Samarra towards the north of the country, and it can be stored, which is 250 million cubic meters in a storage space of 90 billion cubic meters.”
And he stressed, "The rain that fell from southern Samarra to Basra Governorate is not stored, but is used in winter cultivation, irrigation of crops, supporting the marshes and pushing the salty tongue."
Al-Mukhtar stated, “The Turkish side has doubled the water towards Iraq, which is about 500 meters per second, and thus the total revenues will reach two billion cubic meters, and it has been used to provide weaning irrigation, which the Ministry of Water Resources has estimated at two billion and 500 million cubic meters, and thus the winter agricultural season has ended.” ".
It is estimated that "the water storage has been added to it at the range of one billion to one billion and 500 million cubic meters, which is weak and therefore we will be facing a very harsh summer."
Al-Mukhtar concluded that “the agricultural sector drains about 85% of the water, which requires a review of the agricultural policy.”
Iraq has been suffering for three years from scarce water seasons, which greatly affected agricultural plans and contributed to their decline, after a great scarcity of rain, in addition to the water policies of neighboring countries that refused to share the damage.
