Iraq intends to open regional offices for social networking sites

Deputy Chairman of the Transport and Communications Committee in Parliament, Ibrahim Mirani, revealed that there is an intention to open offices for social networking sites in Iraq.
Mirani said, in an interview with "Al-Sabah", that "the intention is to open the offices of" Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube "and others," noting that it is "one of the topics that will be included in the Communications Law to be clear, as it is not possible for a company to operate in Iraq without It has a branch without a license and a legal personality.
He explained, "The goal is to facilitate the follow-up of some personal websites, in addition to deducting part of the imaginary profits that it reaps from Iraq to the state treasury through funded advertisements," noting that "the Communications Law, which the committee intends to read and legislate during the next legislative term, aims to be the Ministry of Communications It is responsible for the state's supreme policies in this sector, sets goals and monitors the work of the Media and Communications Commission, while the Commission continues to deal with mobile phone companies, which will create competition between the ministry and the Commission."
Mirani pointed out that "the powers cannot be withdrawn from the Ministry of Communications and transferred to the Commission according to the relevant law, as some claim, as the powers and duties are granted by law according to the visions of consultants in this field," pointing out that "the next law will be a roadmap for the telecommunications sector to reach ranks with the rest of the world, through clear visions to separate the duties and powers of the ministry and the authority.
And he expected that "the next stage will witness competition between Internet and mobile phone companies, as is the case in the rest of the world, while leaving the freedom of choice to the citizen to compare between the offers offered by these companies to attract the largest number of subscribers," noting that "Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani I am interested in the issue of the fourth license for mobile phones, as work is underway to choose the entity concerned with operating it, which will most likely be national.” Mirani ruled out what he called a "myth" about the existence of mobile subscribers' data in other countries or the monitoring of phones and calls of officials inside the country by external intelligence agencies, stressing that "this data is a matter of national security and is controlled by the National Security and Intelligence services inside the country."
