    Baghdad today - follow-up
Today, Monday (August 21, 2023), an Iraqi political source revealed details of the files that Turkish Minister Hakan Fidan will discuss during his first visit to Iraq since he assumed the foreign portfolio on June 3.
The source stated in a press statement, followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the minister will discuss arrangements for an expected visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq, which Baghdad announced on July 25 without specifying its date, which is what the minister will work to agree on its date." The final, which will be the first since his previous visit to Baghdad 15 years ago, and the topics he will discuss with senior Iraqi officials.
The source added, "The Turkish minister's talks in Baghdad will also deal with the issue of resuming the export of Iraqi Kurdistan's oil through the Turkish port of Ceyhan, which has been suspended since last March due to differences between the two countries, which has caused losses to the region and Iraq amounting to two billion dollars so far."
He explained, "The talks will also deal with the issue of the Turkish opposition Kurdish Workers' Party and its military sites in the regions of northern Iraq, which it takes as a starting point for operations hostile to Turkey, whose forces bomb these bases from time to time and pursue the party's leaders with drones and warplanes."
And he indicated, "The water crisis between the two countries will be a subject of discussion during the visit in order to try to agree on how to cooperate to ensure that Iraq obtains its needs from it, which is a lifeline for development and agricultural expansion."
It is noteworthy that Hakan Fidan is a Turkish politician and former officer in the armed forces who belongs to the ruling Justice and Development Party and an academic specializing in international relations and led the Turkish intelligence service. 2023.

    thorny files
Today, Monday (August 21, 2023), it was officially announced in Baghdad that the Turkish Foreign Minister will pay a visit to Iraq to discuss thorny files between the two countries related to water, oil, and the activity of the Turkish-Kurdish opposition Workers’ Party in the Kurdistan region.
Spokesman for the Iraqi Foreign Ministry Ahmed Al-Sahaf said that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Baghdad the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, to discuss several important files of common interest with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein and with the three presidencies of the country, the government and parliament.
The official spokesman indicated in a press statement that the Turkish minister's talks with his Iraqi interlocutors will deal with the most important concerns of the two neighboring countries and a review of common challenges. Files and issues between them.
Regarding the upcoming visits of Arab and foreign officials to Iraq, Al-Sahhaf stressed that "Baghdad will witness, during the next two weeks, a high-level gathering of ministerial figures who will be held in the Iraqi capital... considering that Baghdad is a meeting point and a path to attract positive and effective dialogues regionally and internationally."

    The visit was delayed
The delay in the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sparked controversy and conflicting news regarding its cancellation or postponement, at a time when the official government agencies in Iraq have not issued any position yet.
On June 26, the Iraqi government announced an expected visit by Erdogan to the capital, Baghdad, to hold talks with Iraqi officials, without revealing any details about it or its official date.
On Tuesday (8 August 2023), Iraqi government sources denied the cancellation of Erdogan's visit to Baghdad, stressing that the visit is "important to Iraq and is still ongoing."
An official in the Prime Ministry said, in a press statement followed by "Baghdad Today", that: "The visit has not been canceled, and the arrangement for it is continuing, but until now the date has not been determined by the Turkish side, due to Erdogan's commitments and his intention to conduct an international visit before visiting Baghdad."
And the official, who asked not to be named, stated that "at the end of this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make an important and historic visit to Iraq, during which many outstanding issues related to security, water, economy, investment, border control, and other common files in the region will be resolved." .

    Erdogan is interested
He added, "The Turkish president is very interested in the upcoming visit to Iraq, and there is no intention to cancel this visit as some parties are trying to promote it. There is no justification for this cancellation. The visit is ongoing and communication between the Turkish and Iraqi sides is continuing to prepare all the technical and other requirements for the visit."
For his part, Karim Aliwi Gahush, a member of the Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee, said, "The historic visit of the Turkish president to Baghdad is ongoing, and there is no delay for it, just as there is no delay in it. The Turkish side has not set its date until the moment, but it will be at the end of the month." current or the beginning of next month at the latest.
And he indicated that "Erdogan's visit to Iraq is very important, as Iraq has files that need to be resolved and important decisions regarding them are taken in agreement with the Turkish side, especially related to the water file, when Iraq suffers from a major and dangerous drought crisis, in addition to the file of re-exporting the region's oil, so stop this export." cause economic damage to Iraq.
He added, "The security file will be at the forefront of the discussions between Erdogan and Iraqi officials, especially with the continuation of the Turkish attacks on Iraqi territory, and this is a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and a threat to its national security, and it must be stopped, and for this visit will be important and different from previous visits, and it will not be a protocol visit only." .

    understandings
Last March, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani made an official visit to the Turkish capital, Ankara, at the head of a large ministerial and security delegation, during which he discussed several files, most notably security, borders, water, energy, and expanding trade between the two countries.
The difficulty of making full understandings between the Iraqi government and the Turkish government regarding ending the presence of the PKK militants in Iraq lies in several military field factors. The most prominent of which is its presence in areas that are difficult for the Iraqi forces to reach, within the Iraqi-Iranian-Turkish triangle, which is under the administration of the Kurdistan Region, in addition to the support that the party’s militants receive from armed factions that are usually described as allies of Iran, especially in the areas of Sinjar, west of Nineveh.
The presence of the party's members, which Ankara classifies as a "terrorist organization" in Iraqi territory, caused many political crises between the two countries, the most recent of which was last year when Baghdad accused Turkish forces of bombing a tourist resort in Dohuk and causing the killing of a number of citizens, which Ankara denied.
