Transport: sustainable growth to expand maritime trade exchange

The Ministry of Transport revealed, yesterday, Wednesday, a development plan in the framework of seeking to achieve sustainable growth and great efficiency in Iraqi maritime transport, while referring to international cooperation to expand the movement of maritime trade exchange.
The ministry's media office said in a statement that "the development plan includes benefiting from plans to develop and modernize Iraq's ports in order to achieve feasibility and benefit for both formations of the General Company for Maritime Transport and the General Company for Iraqi Ports."
He added, "The ministry intends to increase capacity, accelerate loading and unloading operations, and implement projects in major ports such as Umm Qasr, Basra, and Al-Faw, which will reflect positively on the maritime transport services provided in those ports," noting that "a road map has been developed towards developing and strengthening security measures in Ports, and on board ships, to ensure cargo protection, navigation and optimization of logistics services.
He stressed that "there are efforts to develop a logistical system that allows shipments to be tracked and managed efficiently, which reduces transportation costs and delivery time."
He pointed out that "work has been done to strengthen international cooperation by expanding the network of international relations, the movement of maritime trade exchange with neighboring countries and international partners, in addition to developing human cadres and training workers in the field of maritime transport." The ministry's plan includes, "investment in research and development
through Supporting research and technical innovations in the field of maritime transport, in a way that contributes to improving efficiency and sustainability, and improving policies and regulations, such as reforming and simplifying regulations and procedures related to maritime transport to encourage investment and facilitate business.
She pointed out that "the government's approach adopts supportive policies and plans for the development of transport in general, including maritime transport, as well as providing the necessary financing and facilities to achieve sustainable development in this sector, and to enhance its role as a major player in the transport sector globally."
The General Company for Maritime Transport provides various marine services, in addition to the presence of a number of its ships operating within the shipping lines. The company also has distinguished river projects, most notably the river taxi, as well as a number of berths in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
