Representatives warned of the catastrophic repercussions of the continuing water crisis on the agricultural sector, while announcing the government’s intention to send negotiating delegations to the riparian countries to obtain Iraq’s water rights. A member of the Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee in the House of Representatives, Thaer Makhif Al-Kitab, told “Al-Sabah”: There are parties that did not allow Iraq to regain its health in the agricultural sector, and did not negotiate properly in the water file, which led to the deterioration of the two sectors with the southern governorates suffering from drought. . Al-Kitab demanded that there be a starting line for the government to begin negotiating the water issue and present Iraq’s rights to the countries bordering it to discuss the possibility of restoring them during the next stage.
For his part, the representative of the State of Law in Radhi confirmed the government’s intention to send negotiating delegations in the coming days to neighboring countries to secure Iraq’s water shares.
Radi explained in press statements: The government took it upon itself to hold intensive dialogues with upstream countries to resolve the water crisis, indicating that all Turkish promises are still on paper. He added that the water issue is one of the most thorny issues that naturally affects food security, noting that there are government moves to discuss the repercussions of the water crisis with the Syrian side, warning that the continuation of the water crisis portends a disaster at a time when we are heading towards an agricultural season.
As for the member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Rafiq Al-Salhi, he said in a press statement: The drought issue is sensitive, complex, and vital because the percentage of affected governorates is large, pointing out that the issue is not a temporary phenomenon, but rather catastrophic signs looming on the horizon if precautionary measures are not taken.
