Baghdad today - Nineveh

Today, Sunday (October 8, 2023), former politician and MP Joseph Saliwa called for the establishment of a special governorate for Syriacs and Chaldean Assyrians in the Nineveh Plain, while indicating that this region is being targeted.

Saliwa said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The Nineveh Plain region is targeted and is subject to regional conflicts using Iraqi tools. If this region is not self-administered by the people and with international protection, the rest of the land will be taken away."

He added, "The Chaldean, Assyrian, and Syriac people's dignity will be crushed, they will be insulted, and crimes will be committed against them by the merchants of politics, Arabism, and Kurdism."

Saliwa pointed out, "The last step to saving this people is to transform the Nineveh Plain into self-administration and then into a region in accordance with the Iraqi constitution, and any other solutions are narcotic and palliative needles."

On the night of Tuesday, the twenty-sixth of last September, “Al-Haytham Hall” was hosting a wedding party for two young men, amid a large presence of celebrants, the majority of whom appeared to be from the Christian and Shabakite community. The wedding party ended in a tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly a third of those attending this party, as flames fell from the top of the hall’s ceiling onto... The heads of the attendees, and the revelers ended up between a charred corpse or a body riddled with wounds in the halls of hospitals in Hamdaniya, Mosul, and Dohuk.

The Nineveh Plain region belongs to Nineveh Governorate and consists of three districts: Al-Hamdaniya, Al-Sheikhan, and Telkaif. The plain is considered the historical homeland of the Shabaks and the Christians of Iraq, and it still has a heavy Christian presence, in addition to the presence of Yazidis, Turkmen, Shabaks, and Arabs, but the manifestations of terrorism in 2014 contributed to the decrease in their numbers and migration.
