The start of the second phase of rehabilitation work on the historic mosques of Nineveh

The local government of Nineveh announced the launch of the second phase of the project to maintain and restore historical and heritage mosques in the governorate, with international support and implementation and under the supervision of the archaeology and excavation teams, the engineering effort, and the municipalities of Nineveh.
The mosques in Nineveh Governorate, like all their historical, heritage and archaeological monuments, were subjected to destruction and vandalism as a result of the battles to expel the criminal “ISIS” gangs that controlled the governorate for nearly two years. The Director of Nineveh Antiquities and Heritage, Khair al-Din Ahmed, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: The engineering reconstruction teams and excavation teams have begun the reconstruction and restoration of a number of historical and heritage mosques, including the Umayyad, Hadari, Pasha, and Toukandi mosques, which are being supported and funded by the (Aleph) International Organization and implemented by the (Lakeld) Association

He stated that the excavation work for these mosques, which will be under the supervision of a specialized excavation team from the Antiquities of Nineveh, will take place under the foundations of the minaret of the mosque to determine how strong the foundations are withstand the maintenance and restoration work for each of them, before deciding on the work of its reconstruction, rehabilitation or construction.
In the same context, Khair al-Din revealed that excavation teams discovered three layers of Islamic housing, in addition to the discovery of two archaeological graves during the launch of the rehabilitation and reconstruction work of the Umayyad Mosque in the old city of Mosul.
