Is Iraq close to linking the East and West through the development road and the port of Al-Faw?
Yesterday, Saturday, the Ministry of Transport confirmed that Iraqi ports are preparing to become the most important container transport stations in the world, detailing the development road project scheduled to be completed in 2028.
Development path
The spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, Maytham Al-Safi, said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that “the development road passes through three main stages and will be expanded over time to be a link between the East and the West,” pointing out that “the first stage of the road is to pass through the Shabouli line from the port of Al-Faw towards The Iraqi-Turkish border.
Al-Safi added, “Transport capacities will double upon completion of the development road project,” noting that “the feasibility study for the road shows that the capacity of Umm Qasr Port will be one million containers annually, while Al-Faw Port is likely to be two and a half million containers out of a total of 3.5 million containers.” One million containers.
Iraq ports
The spokesman for the Ministry of Transport explained via Al Mada, “Iraqi ports are approaching international ports and are preparing to be the most important container terminals in the world,” adding that “Baghdad’s discussions with the Gulf states will be supportive of the port and a gateway to Europe and Asia.”
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Transport announced last month the progress of work on the Grand Faw Port projects, and confirmed that the completion rates achieved exceeded 57 percent in the five berths project.
Regional integration
Economic expert Qusay Safwan said during an interview with Al Mada: “Iraq desires economic integration with the countries of the region, whether the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a depth to link it to the economy of the African continent, or with Iran as a line linking Iraq to the countries of the former Soviet Union and the Asian system.”
He adds, “Al-Faw Port can link the Iraqi economy with the economy of India and China, in addition to the Fish Khabour port, which links Iraq with the economy of the European Union countries.”
Safwan continues, “The development path will not only be for transporting goods and services, but rather for transporting energy, gas and oil from the Gulf countries and Iraq towards the European Union,” noting that it is “the closest road to the countries of Eastern Europe.”
It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, announced last May the development road project to link the large port of Al-Faw with Turkey and all the way to Europe, during a conference in Baghdad with transport officials from neighboring countries.
Al-Sudani said at the time, “The 1,200-kilometre-long project, which extends from the border with Turkey in the north to the Gulf in the south, will be the cornerstone of a sustainable economy that does not depend on oil, and contributes to regional integration.”
International economy
For his part, Iraqi government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi confirmed that “Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is enthusiastic about the development road project, and Ankara or any country did not impose any conditions for entering into it.”
The Development Road Project witnesses the participation of 10 regional countries: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the Emirates, Bahrain and Iran.
The government spokesman indicated, “There are no conditions for Turkey or any country to enter into this project, which is an urgent Iraqi need, because it will improve the country’s economy and its infrastructure, as Iraq needs a network of roads and railways,” stressing that “dozens of bids have been received from Local and foreign companies and countries have expressed their desire to participate in implementing the development road, and the Supreme Committee supervising this project will take preliminary decisions in this regard.”
new world
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last September, “The Turkish-Iraqi development road project provides the opportunity to build a new world.”
Erdogan stressed that “his country sensed a great determination from the Gulf countries to implement the Turkish-Iraqi development road project,” adding: “We are also determined (to implement the project).”
For his part, the Turkish Minister of Transport, Abdulkadir Oraloglu, expected to complete the development road with Iraq in 2028.
He added, "The visit to Baghdad gave us the opportunity to witness the will in Iraq that the path of development must be accomplished as soon as possible, and Turkey also has the same will."
In the same context, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated earlier that “intensive negotiations are taking place with Iraq, Qatar, and the UAE regarding a study of the development road project that will be prepared during the next few months.”
Fidan pointed out that “there are 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) of work scheduled in Iraqi territory as part of the project,” adding that “the part within the Turkish border is about 1,600-1,700 kilometers.”
