    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]The Ministry of Transport reported that there is high coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government regarding the vital development road project.

The "Development Road" project includes a group of roads, railways, ports, and new cities, through which Baghdad aims to shorten the travel time between Asia and Europe via Turkey, and to transform into a transit center through Al-Faw port, which is the first stop in the project.

The length of the railways and highways that will connect Al-Faw Port with the Turkish border is expected to reach 1,200 kilometers, at a cost of $17 billion. The aforementioned port is scheduled to be the largest port in the Middle East and construction work on it will be completed in 2025.

The project, which was initially called The "Dry Canal", before it was changed to the "Development Road Project" last March, coinciding with a meeting in Ankara that brought together Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, stating that it is the basis of a sustainable, non-oil economic project.

    Fish Khabour, the connecting point.

The Director of the Media Office of the Ministry of Transport, Maitham Abdel Safi, said in an interview followed by Al-Iqtisad News, “The Kurdistan region is part of this project, and the Fish Khabour area is the connecting point on the road, as the Ministry informed the regional government and the Turkish side in this regard.”

He noted that “the Italian consulting company determined the paths of the road, with prior agreement, with what is in the interest of the project,” adding that “there are meetings between Iraq and Turkey in this regard according to the agreement, once in Iraq and once in Turkey.”

Maytham Abdel Safi added: “There were There are agreements for an Iraqi technical delegation to visit the link point for the Turkish side with Europe, specifically with Bulgaria in terms of road routes.”

It is noteworthy that the development road project occupied an important place on the agenda of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during his visit to Iraq last August, and the talks he held. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last September, at the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi,

about 270 kilometers need to be connected

. The director of the media office of the Ministry of Transport stated that “there is a distance of 270 kilometers between the Iraqi side and the Turkish side that needs to be connected,” stressing that “the Turkish side He has no problem regarding the path of development in terms of preparations and other things.”

He pointed out that "the Iraqi side is in the preliminary design stage, and 66% has been completed for the railway line, 52% for the land line, 80% for soil plowing operations, and 1,200 kilometers regarding the topographic survey."

He pointed out that “the total distance of the road from Al-Faw Port towards Fishkhabour, which is the connection point with the Turkish border, is 1,200 kilometers,” noting that “there are field visits by technical and non-technical teams, and the Turkish side visited Al-Faw Port and was informed of the completion rates of the project, as well as There are continuous visits from the Iraqi side to Turkey through technical committees.”

Maitham Abdel Safi also said, “It was agreed with Turkey to train some cadres in the General Railway Company, and there will be an office for the development road in Baghdad, and another in Ankara, and their work will be joint.”

Regarding the route of the road, Maitham Abdel Safi explained that “the project will start from Al-Faw port in Basra Governorate and pass through the governorates of Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Diwaniyah, Najaf, Karbala, Babylon, Baghdad, Salah al-Din, and Nineveh towards the connecting point in Fish Khabour.”

    Coordination between Baghdad and Erbil.

He also confirmed that “there is coordination between us and the Kurdistan Regional Government in this regard, and there was a visit by the Minister of Transport in the Kurdistan Regional Government to the Minister of Transport in Baghdad, and there is an expected visit by the Minister of Transport to the Kurdistan Region according to an invitation from the Minister of Transport in the Kurdistan Regional Government.” ".

It is noteworthy that Iraq and Turkey agreed last February to open mutual offices in order to follow up on the work related to the completion of the development road project, and the agreement was reached after a meeting between the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, and his Turkish counterpart, Abdul Qadir Oraloglu.

The project is implemented in three phases. The first phase ends in 2028, which will allow Al-Faw Port to receive ships. The second phase ends in 2033 with the completion of the construction of all railways and land roads, while the third and final phase is scheduled to be completed by 2050, the date for the completion of all construction work in Al-Faw Port.

The railways and roads in this project, linked to the railways in Turkey, will allow the transportation of goods between the two countries within hours using fast trains with speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour.[/rtl]
