Today, Saturday (April 20, 2024), the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee commented on the coincidence of the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq with the visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sawadni to Washington, while noting that it is important to resolve many outstanding issues.
Committee member Abbas al-Jubouri said, “Erdogan’s visit to Iraq has no connection to the timing of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani’s visit to the United States of America. Erdogan’s visit has been planned for a very long time, and it is an important visit to resolve many outstanding issues.” .
Al-Jubouri stated, “Iraq wants, through Erdogan’s visit, to resolve the outstanding files, especially the water file, as well as the oil re-export file through the Turkish port of Ceyhan, as well as the security file. It wants a visit with results, and these results may appear in the near future, especially due to the presence of Iraqi seriousness.” And Turkey to resolve these issues and not make them stuck and a stage without solutions.”
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that the water issue would be one of the most important items on his agenda during his visit to Iraq.
Erdogan indicated, in statements to Turkish media, that “Turkey is studying requests submitted by the Iraqi side regarding water,” stressing that “his country is seeking to solve this problem, in addition to other issues related to the flow of natural gas and oil to Turkey, and we will seek to address them.” Also,” hinting at the possibility of visiting Erbil after the end of his discussions in the capital, Baghdad.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry had previously announced, through Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Yildiz, that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would pay a visit to Iraq before the end of April.
It is noteworthy that the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, had previously revealed an Iraqi movement to resolve the water crisis with Turkey and Iran.
Abdullah said in a televised interview, “Iraq is seeking to reach a clear agreement with Turkey regarding Iraq’s water share,” noting that “Iraq is working on preparing a draft memorandum of understanding with Turkey regarding the water file that will be signed during President Erdogan’s visit,” Abdullah added. “We informed Iran of the necessity of coordination regarding the rivers that feed the Tigris,” pointing to “Iran’s demand to open the waters of the Karun River to improve the conditions of the Shatt al-Arab.”
Iraq is trying to exploit the overwhelming Turkish desire to establish an economic partnership with it and penetrate its investment market to benefit from its geographical location and oil wealth, in resolving the thorny water issue, which has become a dilemma for it that rises to the level of an existential threat due to the extreme scarcity of its water resources, for which Turkey bears a large part of the responsibility due to... The dams it built on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which supply Iraq with the bulk of the water it needs for use in drinking, agriculture and industry.
