    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Parliamentary Finance Committee confirmed today, Monday (April 22, 2024), that Turkey seeks to triple its investments in Iraq, while noting that the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan comes in the midst of exceptional circumstances taking place in the region.
Committee member Mudar Al-Karawi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The rate of trade between Baghdad and Ankara ranges from 16-18 billion dollars annually and is specified in 13 sectors, most notably agricultural crops, foodstuffs, and building materials, especially since Iraq constitutes a large market for its products .  "
    A visit in exceptional circumstances
He added, "The visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Baghdad is the first in many years and comes in the midst of exceptional circumstances in the Middle East region," pointing out that "Ankara is aware of the importance of Iraq and its role in the region and is seeking to create great economic understandings, especially with the imminent launch of... The first stage of the development road, which will be a major economic gateway not only to Baghdad, but also to Ankara, as it is the largest beneficiary of a project that will change the map of maritime transport in the world .  ”
Al-Karawi pointed out that “Ankara wants to triple its investments in Iraq over the past years, especially since it enjoys good relations and is aware of the internal situation, and it is trying to seize investment opportunities, especially with the presence of a strong movement in the construction and services file, which currently includes 10 sectors, most notably housing.”
    Search for stuck files
Earlier today, the Iraqi Political and Economic Center demanded that the Iraqi government make the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Baghdad a gateway to resolving many outstanding issues, the most important of which is the water issue .
The director of the center, Wissam Hadmal Al-Hilu, said in a statement received by “Baghdad Today” that “the Iraqi government must take advantage of that visit to clearly raise all the outstanding issues with Turkey, and work to come up with positive results that are satisfactory to both parties and in a way that meets the aspirations of the Iraqis, especially since many meetings have taken place.” The discussions between officials in the two countries in recent years did not yield practical results, and resulted only in useless statements, especially with regard to the “water” file, which has been largely unresolved for a long time .
Oil and visa are a priority
Al-Hilu highlights five important files that are a priority for Iraqis, the first of which is “the water file, the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil line, the development road, the establishment of an economic city in southern Iraq, and entry visas for Iraqis to Turkey through the Gateway company .”
Al-Hilu believes that “the water issue is the main concern of the Iraqis, and this file is more important than the oil file at the present time, even though Turkey was harmed by the cessation of pumping Iraqi oil through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, which has been closed since last March and which transports 500,000 barrels per day from the Kurdistan region to Jahiyan Port in Turkey, where the global oil market is awaiting the resumption of work after the center and the region reached a previous meeting to supply Baghdad with 250 thousand barrels per day through the Iraqi Oil Marketing Company .
Among the most important files that concern Iraqis in this context, Al-Hilu referred to the issue of entry visas for Iraqis to Turkey, given that in the past the visa was obtained within a day or two “online”, while Turkey approved amendments to the procedures for Iraqis obtaining visas, This is done through the “Gateway” company, with requirements similar to those for obtaining “Schengen”, and some are denied a visa .
Al-Helou adds, "These measures made it difficult for Iraqis to enter Turkey, while many Iraqis, due to geographical proximity in particular, prefer to go to Turkey, and with the commercial activity and trade in clothes, jewelry and perfumes, and the increase in commercial transactions, until our import has become almost daily at the level of fruits and vegetables and many other... Materials ".
Al-Hilu explained that despite the impact of the new controls for granting visas, Turkey is still at the forefront of Iraqi tourists, and the number of flights reaches more than 150 flights per week, and they are carried out by Turkish Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Fly Baghdad, and a number of other airlines, which are distributed among... 150 flights in two weeks at Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, Kirkuk and Erbil airports .
Al-Helou stated that in the year 2022, trade exchange between the two countries recorded 15.2 billion dollars, as Turkish exports reached 13.8 billion dollars, while Iraqi exports were 1.4 billion dollars, which means that Iraq is the country that imports the most goods from Turkey, especially in the clothing, furniture and materials sectors. Food, as well as Iraqi investments in Turkey, so that Iraqis are among the largest buyers of real estate in Turkey .
Al-Hilu concluded his statement by saying, “In light of the development of trade relations between the two countries, despite the outstanding issues, most notably the “water” file, which is expected to be resolved clearly and with a specific timetable, we see that there is an opportunity for Iraq and Turkey to reach broader understandings through the expected visit of the President. "The Turkish government, especially in light of the development path project adopted by Iraq, and Turkey's contribution to it."
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said, in a press statement followed by “Baghdad Today,” that Erdogan will visit Baghdad and Erbil, and will meet with both his Iraqi counterpart, Abdul Latif Rashid, and Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, and during the visit, more than 20 agreements will be signed. With Iraq, Fidan expressed his belief that Turkish-Iraqi relations will be an important example in the region, especially with the implementation of the “Development Road” project, to which President Erdogan attaches great importance.
