Donald Trump launched a well-worn defense of gun control laws at a rally tonight saying arming teachers and students would have helped stop the Oregon school killer.
Speaking to supporters in Franklin, Tennessee, Trump also repeated the familiar line that a lack of mental health services are to blame for mass shootings, before adding: 'It's not the guns'.
The current Republican frontrunner also bragged about his own handgun carry permit in his home state of New York, saying anyone who tries to assault him will be 'shocked'.

Trump also repeated the familiar argument that poor mental health provision was behind mass shootings, before adding: 'It's not the guns'
To a mixture of laughter and applause, he said: 'Can you imagine with Trump, somebody says, "Ohhh, all these big monsters aren't around, he's easy pickins", and then ... pu-ching!
'So this is about self-defense, plain and simple.'
Speaking about mental heath provision, he continued: 'Many states and many cities are closing their mental health facilities and closing them down.
They're closing them because they don't have the funding. And we have to start looking much stronger into mental health.
'No matter what you do, you will always have problems... but it's not the guns. It's the people, it's these sick people.'
Trump also used Charles Bronson film 'Death Wish', in which a liberal architect embarks on a killing spree after thugs kill his wife and rape his daughter, as a way to spur on the crowd.

Trump's recent words on gun control mark a significant turnaround from his previous stance, in which he backed a ban on assault rifles and approved longer wait times for permits
At one point he got the crowd to shout out the name of the film in unison, before adding: 'Today you can't make that movie because it's not politically correct.'
Trump's stance in favor keeping Second Amendment rights as they stand is a significant departure from his previous calls for a ban on assault weapons and longer waiting times for a gun permit.
Speaking today, Trump insisted that he is now 'a very, very big Second Amendment person.'
Today marked the second time Trump had spoken in the Nashville area in five weeks. Tennessee is among the states holding their primaries on March 1, also called Super Tuesday.
