    Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel

[ltr]The Higher Agricultural Committee in the province of Dhi Qar warned of a future disaster that threatens the lives of citizens and farmers due to water scarcity and demanded the adoption of modern irrigation systems instead of the old irrigation methods.
"The province of Dhi Qar faces a future disaster that directly affects the lives of citizens, farmers, agricultural lands and livestock," said the head of the Higher Agricultural Committee, Dhi Qar Governor Adel al-Dakhili. "This crisis is caused by the scarcity of water and the lack of water releases, .
The head of the Higher Agricultural Committee that "the water crisis reflected negatively on many aspects of life as the releases and water quota does not cover the need for conservation and does not fit the size of agricultural areas, not to mention the provinces exceeded the water quota in the province of Dhi Qar."
Al-Dakhili stressed on the need to follow up the water excesses outside the agricultural plan and raise them periodically in order to preserve the quantities of available water. He called for using modern methods in watering the plantations represented by the drip irrigation system instead of the irrigation method used by most farmers and farmers, Water ".
In the same context, the regional director of Nature Iraq in the south, Jassem al-Asadi, predicted that "the water crisis will be exacerbated after the operation of the Turkish Alesso dam in the coming months."
Al-Asadi told Al-Mada that "the huge Jesu dam, which was built on the Tigris River, will cause great economic and environmental damage to the Iraqi cities on the Tigris River Basin when it is operational in March." He pointed out that "Iraq will face a large water deficit In the Tigris River, where the rate of water revenues to Iraq from the river will drop by 11 billion cubic meters.
"The water levels of the Tigris River entering Iraq will fall from 20.93 billion cubic meters a year to 9.7 billion cubic meters, which constitutes about 50 percent of the annual water needs of the river," he said.
Asadi points out that the reduction of Turkey's share of Iraq's water will make him lose (40%) of its arable land, which is estimated at (696) thousand hectares. "The dam will also affect the Iraqi marshes significantly and will shrink.
Al-Asadi points out that the construction of the dam is geo-political in the first place, and will greatly affect the water situation in Iraq.
The regional director of Nature Iraq, one of the international organizations accredited to the United Nations, adds that the Elissu dam is located in the south of Anatolia in Turkey and is 65 kilometers from the Syrian-Iraqi border. The design is 135 meters high and 1820 meters long and 313 square kilometers, And generates 1,200 MW of electricity and estimated cost of construction of two billion euros, and the duration of completion of eight years.
He pointed out that the initial work in the dam began in 2008 with multi-lateral funding (Britain, Germany, Austria, Italy and Sweden and other donors). However, in 2009 international funding was stopped due to international pressure led by German Oulie and Dow, in nature.
"But Turkey is determined to complete the construction of the dam," he said. "The Turkish government has completed the dam in the hope of dictating it in March this year," he said.
