The United States has warned China that there will be "consequences" for what it called "the growing militarization of the disputed islands in the South China Sea," after news that Beijing has transferred missiles to the region.
The threat came after the Pentagon on Thursday filed a formal complaint and asked China to investigate the incident of American pilots who had laser beams while flying over its military base in Djibouti. Beijing denies the US accusations and calls it "arbitrary".
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a news conference on Thursday that Washington was "well aware" of China's growing military presence in the South China Sea.
Huckabee Sanders was responding to a CNBC report on China's transfer of anti-ship missiles and surface-to-air missile systems to three disputed sites in the western Philippine island of Spratly.
"The Chinese will have consequences in the near and long term," Sanders said.
China has not denied the report, as a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman told reporters that Beijing's sovereignty over Spratly is "indisputable", adding "the deployment of military facilities aimed at protecting the state, not targeting any other country."[/ltr]
