TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has reopened a nuclear plant that has been shut down for nine years to boost uranium enrichment if the nuclear deal with major powers breaks down after the United States withdraws from it, Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said on Wednesday.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have increased since US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 deal, describing him as deeply flawed. Under the deal, Iran has cut its enrichment program to allay concerns that it could develop nuclear weapons, in return for freeing sanctions.
European countries signatories to the agreement try to save it, especially as it considers it crucial to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered the Islamic Republic's Atomic Energy Organization this month to begin preparing to increase enrichment capacity if European efforts fail.
The organization said on Wednesday that in response to Khamenei's order and in response to Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal, a uranium hexafluoride production plant, the raw material used by centrifuges enriching uranium, was reopened and a barrel of yellow cake was delivered there.
The raw uranium, known as yellow cake, is converted into a gas called uranium hexafluoride before fertilization.
Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) said on its website that the uranium hexafluoride plant, which had been idle since 2009 due to the lack of yellow cake, was part of the uranium conversion facility in Isfahan.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors Iran's commitment to the nuclear deal, said on June 5 that Iran's Atomic Energy Organization had informed it of "tentative" plans to resume production of uranium hexafluoride.
The move is symbolic and allowed by a nuclear deal that allows Iran to enrich uranium to 3.67 percent, far below the 90 percent needed for weapons, and shortens its stockpile of enriched uranium hexafluoride by no more than 300 kg.
Iranian President Hassan Rowhani sent letters to his counterparts in France, Germany and Britain warning them that the time to salvage the nuclear deal was running out.
Rohani expressed Iran's demands "very clearly" in his letter, the website of the government quoted Rohani's office director Mahmoud Waazi as saying on Wednesday.
Washington will start resuming economic sanctions on Tehran in August and will impose more in November.
