"The pollution of the soil in Kuwait is one of the largest environmental disasters on the planet because of the remnants of the Iraqi invasion, in addition to the operations of the company since its establishment," Al-Okhari told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Kuwait Kuwait Polluted Soil Rehabilitation Conference.
"Pollution processes are unique, and are usually difficult to address because of the time accumulation and the impact of weather factors with the survival of heavy materials."
The external area of the pollution is estimated at 114 square kilometers as a surface and 26 million cubic meters, indicating that the process of soil rehabilitation will begin in northern Kuwait because of the containment of the region on water sources.
The official pointed out that the Kuwaiti area of soil treatment at an estimated cost of 20 million Kuwaiti dinars (about 66 million US dollars) and will increase this cost to 50 million dinars (about $ 165 million) with the treatment of larger areas of soil.
He pointed out that these funds will be allocated only for the rehabilitation of Kuwaiti soil and will be paid by the United Nations compensation for the invasion of Kuwait.
He predicted that the rehabilitation of the soil in Kuwait over a period of time estimated at about 10 years "may increase."
He described external pollution caused by the Saddam invasion in 1990 as "one of the biggest environmental disasters on the planet"
