    (AFP) - US President Donald Trump on Friday announced the nomination of US Ambassador to Canada Kelly Kraft to be Washington's new ambassador to the United Nations.
    "Kelly has done a great job in representing our country, and I have no doubt that under her leadership, our country will be represented at the highest level," Trump said in a tweet. 
    If the US Senate approves her appointment, Kelly Kraft will fill the post late last year with the resignation of former South Carolina governor Nicky Haley and the rising star of the Republican Party. 
    Kraft's nomination came a week after the Trump option was pulled out of former Foreign News anchor and Foreign Office spokeswoman Heather Neuert amid criticism that it lacked the weight required for this high-ranking diplomat. 
    Secretary of State Mike Pompeo immediately praised the nomination. 
    "Ambassador Kraft was a great advocate of national security and economic interests in Canada and is very qualified to do the same work at the United Nations," he said in a statement.
    Kraft was a strong supporter of President George W. Bush. Bush, who appointed him as president at the United Nations where she represented Washington at UN meetings. 
    Kelly Kraft, 56, is a businesswoman from Kentucky, married to Joe Craft, who heads the company that is the second largest coal producer in the eastern United States. Forbes magazine estimated its fortune in 2012 at $ 1.4 billion. 
    In 2017 Kelly Kraft, a major donor to the Republican Party, was appointed US Ambassador to Canada and was the first woman to hold the post.
