, a US State Department spokesman confirmed that Foreign Minister Michael Pompeo granted Iraq a 30-day exemption to allow him to pay off his electricity imports from Iran, looking to strengthen cooperation with Baghdad to reduce its dependence on Iranian energy imports.
The spokesman revealed that "the exemption confirms that Iraq is able to meet its energy needs in the short term, while taking steps to reduce its dependence on Iranian energy imports."
The spokesman pointed out that the minister briefly extended this exemption, to allow time "for the formation of a credible Iraqi government."
He said that "once that government is formed, the foreign minister will reassess whether he will renew the exemption and its duration, and looks forward to resuming our cooperation with the government of Iraq to reduce its dependence on Iranian unreliable energy imports."
The spokesman stressed that "the exemption granted by the minister applies to electricity, but with regard to payments for imports of natural gas from Iran, it is up to the Ministry of the Treasury."
The State Department spokesman concluded that Secretary Pompeo had specified that "it is in the US National Security Service to renew the exemption, and that any decision to cancel or renew it in the future will be at the discretion of the Secretary of State in consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury."
