The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, revealed, on Wednesday, the files he discussed with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.
Barzani said, during a press conference he held with the British minister, in Erbil: "We thank Britain for the main role in issuing a UN Security Council resolution in establishing the safe haven in 1991," stressing that "building this haven was a new beginning for the Kurdistan region, and since that time Until now, our relations with Britain continued in all fields and developed further during the war on ISIS.”
He warned of "the damage caused by the drought that the region and Iraq are exposed to," stressing "Kurdistan's commitment to international resolutions in preserving the environment and protecting it from climate change."
Barzani continued, "We discussed several topics with the minister, including the development of bilateral relations, the differences and outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad and the efforts made to address them, the war against ISIS and fears of its re-emergence, and the situation in the region in general in addition to other issues of common interest."
And he indicated, "The Kurdistan region and Iraq were affected by the outbreak of the Corona virus, which caused severe economic damage, and to advance the economy for the post-Corona period, we need the cooperation and solidarity of all."
For his part, the British Foreign Secretary said: "My visit to Iraq and the Kurdistan region comes within the framework of interest in bilateral relations, and we are friends of the Kurdish people and we have historical relations and have faced many challenges."
And he said: "I think that the region can face the dangers of ISIS," adding: "He spoke with the president of the region about the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan region, and Britain will continue to abide by its commitments towards Iraq."
Raab indicated, "The British government has allocated a sum of money to support the Peshmerga forces."
He added: "We discussed with President Barzani the role of free media and freedom of opinion, and we also discussed issues of education and climate change," calling Barzani to visit London: "We hope to see the region's president there in the near future." Ended 29/A43
