Doctors Without Borders confirmed today, Thursday, that the health sector in Iraq urgently needs training and support to ensure its ability to confront the third wave of the Corona virus epidemic.
"The health sector has a lot of vital equipment, but it needs a sufficient number of trained medical staff," said Dr. Shaizer Majid, the medical coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in Iraq, noting that "there is no point in owning a lot of machines without trained crew.
Majid explained, "Anesthesiologists are the ones who run the intensive care departments in hospitals in Baghdad, but they require qualified doctors and highly trained nurses to deal with complex cases."
He continued, "Many Covid-19 patients only come to the hospital when their condition is very critical and either receive some medical care or oxygen therapy, which requires highly trained medical staff."
And Doctors Without Borders confirmed, "Iraq has a mandatory vaccination program, but the coverage is low, as 9 million out of 40 million people have been vaccinated."
Majid said, "There is a lot of hesitation regarding vaccination," noting that "Doctors Without Borders works in areas with a low vaccination rate. Each sub-region in Baghdad has its own reasons," attributing this to religious or cultural reasons.
He added, "Doctors Without Borders is trying to determine the reasons for the frequency of the vaccine in a specific geographical area and is trying to target the population for this reason."
For his part, Dr. Hassan Ali at Karkh General Hospital explained, “The lack of public awareness of health procedures has increased the suffering of doctors, noting that” there are restrictions on health services in general, but on top of that we have a population group that does not take into account any of the measures. health".
Surat Al-Rawi, a general practitioner in Baghdad Hospital, stated that "citizens do not understand how important it is and we are trying to convince them to inform them of its benefits, but to no avail."
Al-Rawi added, "The Ministry of Health needs to do more to ensure that public awareness is spread across the country."
She pointed out, "Everyone needs to know the necessity of this. We have lost many lives, but we must do more to save the rest."
The country has recorded a total of 2.2 million cases and more than 24,000 deaths since the outbreak of the epidemic in 2020.
