The government faces rising prices with decisions and bills to support the poor

A year and a half passed since the decision to raise the exchange rate of the dollar, shocking Iraqis with an unprecedented rise in food prices in local markets, especially edible oil, due to the Russian-Ukrainian war that indirectly cast a shadow over Iraq.
Traders were accused of manipulating prices for unknown purposes, in addition to the lack of factories for the manufacture of oil inside the country, which caused prices to rise significantly, amid government assurances to citizens that they would control the market.
Invitations to the security services
In this regard, the representative of the Al-Fateh Alliance Ali Al-Jamali said, “The issue of rising food prices is a game by traders and not the repercussions of the dollar and others, because the dollar has risen for more than a year.”
In an interview with Al-Mada, Al-Jamali indicated that "there is a fear of the (Russian-Ukrainian) war, and this fear was planted by merchants," calling on the security services to "take their role in prosecuting price manipulators at all levels."
He added that "the campaigns launched by the government should not be dedicated to low-income shop owners, but rather a legal campaign to monitor the prices of traders in the price exchange in the markets of Shorja and Jamila and others."
Al-Jamali explained, "The issue of accountability or hosting the Minister of Commerce in the House of Representatives is a similar step to its predecessors, such as hosting Finance Minister Ali Allawi, who cracked the heads of parliament and as a result says that this is what the people agreed upon."
Iraq does not have factories
On the other hand, the economic expert, Nasser Al-Kinani, believes that "vegetable oil today, its price has reached 4000 dinars per liter, while its value for purchase is not equal to more than 1,000 dinars, meaning that the profit is 3000 dinars, due to the currently rampant greed."
Al-Kinani said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "Iraq does not have factories for the production of oil from raw materials and others, but rather has filling factories, as the industry needs hydrogenation and other things. Therefore, we import crude oils, and then the filling process takes place internally."
He added that "the oil industry needs to grow corn or sunflowers, in addition to re-refining and industry, and all of these are not present in Iraq."
Al-Kinani also pointed out that “Russia and Ukraine are almost the food basket of Europe and Asia, and Iraq was completely dependent on wheat or Ukrainian wheat.”
government assurances
In addition, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, the financial advisor to the Prime Minister, reassured the citizens that the country is hedging through its official federal institutions for its food security.
In an interview with Al-Mada, Saleh said, "You should not worry too much about this issue, which was really affected by the repercussions of the Corona virus and the Russian-Ukrainian war in global supply shortages and the sudden rise in prices, especially in recent days."
He added that "the two warring parties are responsible for the world's grain supply chains by no less than 30%."
Saleh pointed out that "there is a wide government movement to confront the rise in prices due to the global shortage in basic foodstuffs by supporting the poor segments covered by social care and expanding the base of inclusion in them, as well as strengthening the ration card at subsidized prices and direct supervision of support for farmers during the grain harvest season, which It will start during the next two months from southern Iraq, up to the Iraqi grain belt in the north, and confirm the guarantee of Iraq’s need for grain and its stocks of more than 6 million tons annually, while supporting farmers’ prices to implement Iraq’s food security maps.
He pointed out that "the Ministry of Finance is preparing a law to combat poverty that will be presented to the House of Representatives through the government within the coming days."
On Monday (March 7, 2022), the Minister of Commerce, Alaa Al-Jubouri, confirmed that there are enough foodstuffs for everyone.
Al-Jubouri said, in a press conference with the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hakim Al-Zamili, that "the strength of the citizen is a red danger, and everyone must cooperate."
He added, "We have sufficient foodstuffs for everyone, and there is no need to go to the markets to buy them. We have found parliamentary support to confront the rise in prices, and we will look for new countries to buy some foodstuffs."
