The local market witnessed an increase in the prices of some products, especially vegetables, with a noticeable scarcity in marketing quantities, and while some observers considered it a normal and seasonal matter, the Ministry of Agriculture opened the door to
importing these products temporarily to compensate for the decrease in their quantities in the wholesale markets and curb prices.
Citizens are complaining of greed on the part of merchants and marketers after the price of a kilogram of tomatoes reached 2,000 dinars, after their price ranged between 500-750 dinars per kilogram over the past months, in addition to the successive increase in the prices of other products, such as table eggs, as the price of one layer reached 6,750 dinars. The Ministry of Agriculture stresses the importance of adhering to the “agricultural calendar” and preventing commodity dumping, which ultimately guarantees reasonable and reasonable prices for fruits and vegetables that suit consumers’ incomes, while emphasizing the sustainability of local agricultural production as a guarantee of the country’s food security. Hatem Abdel Rahim, one of Alwa Al-Rasheed’s traders, explained to “Al-Sabah”: The rise witnessed in the prices of some types of vegetables, specifically tomatoes, is relative and seasonal and is subject to supply and demand within the market. He added: “The Ministry of Agriculture did well by opening the doors to imports, as it did previously with the egg product, in order to control prices and curb their rise.”
In turn, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed its full commitment to the (Agricultural Calendar) program in the process of importing vegetables and fruits from outside the country, as the emergency increase witnessed in the market led to a decision being taken to allow the entry of tomato crops for a limited period from abroad and taking appropriate measures to control prices in the local market.
Mahdi Al-Qaisi, advisor to the ministry, revealed to Al-Sabah that approval had been obtained to open the door to importing tomatoes for a specific period to provide sufficient quantities of them and achieve a price balance.
He added that we will have an abundance of production from the holy governorates of Karbala and Najaf with this crop starting in the middle of next month, indicating that opening imports aims to avoid high prices, provide a necessary material for the citizen, and achieve a balance between supply and demand so that high prices do not affect the income of shoppers.
For its part, the warehouses of the Al-Hussein and Abbasid Shrines farms and Al-Firdaws farms pumped large quantities of refrigerated potatoes, dates, cucumbers, onions and other products, after the great demand for them by citizens.
