500 billion dinars annually did not save the streets from damage
The Iraqis have been suffering for many years from ways that caused the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives until the number of victims of the terrorist operations that took place in the country.
And popular demands are still continuing, to pave and repair hundreds of highways in the country, without a response from the government or from the authorities responsible for the matter.
In this regard, the General Traffic Directorate has distanced itself from the responsibility of disposing of the money collected from drivers for repairing damaged roads.
The director of the directorate's media, Major Haider Muhammad, told Al-Mada that "the issue of collecting money for transferring wheels and others all goes to the state treasury."
Muhammad added, “The distribution and disposal of them is the prerogative of the government according to the needs of the regions, roads and departments that need maintenance and others.”
On the other hand, Member of Parliament, Muhammad Al-Baldawi, revealed the existence of major corruption doors in the file of collecting money from vehicle drivers and allocating it to roads and bridges.
Al-Baldawi said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "as members of the House of Representatives in the last session, we addressed the concerned authorities from the Ministry of Finance and others to find out the areas and mechanisms through which this money is spent."
He added, "The roads, especially at the entrances to the capital, Baghdad, are still suffering from bumps, which have not witnessed any progress."
In addition, the economic expert, Nabil Jabbar, estimated that the annual traffic revenues would reach 500 billion, stressing that all of them go to the Ministry of Finance.
Jabbar said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "these imports include the renewal of annuals, market licenses and fines, in addition to road fees, and thus the total is 500 billion dinars."
He explained, "If these sums are used correctly and used for road maintenance, then with accurate calculations, they are sufficient for more than 200 to 250 linear kilometers of roads, and this number is very large and sufficient to make a complete circular road to the capital, Baghdad."
Jabbar pointed out that "what is happening is mismanagement, as these sums are not employed in the right place and are spent and wasted in incorrect ways, and we do not know where they go, and this issue is reflected on all joints, not only roads."
Meanwhile, Hussein Hamid (36 years), owner of a taxi, said that the unpaved roads in the capital, Baghdad, caused great damage to his tires and the wheels of citizens, including taxi drivers and others.
Hamed added, "When anyone buys a wheel, he must pay financial fees for the purpose of reclamation of roads and bridges, but nothing of this sort has been touched."
He called on officials and competent authorities to "assume their responsibility and expedite the development of rapid plans to repair damaged roads and pave other roads."
