A parliamentarian, warning of running out of wheat: Iraq's stockpile of this substance is not enough for a month
Shafaq News/ Member of Parliament, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, Secretary-General of the Euphrates Movement, warned on Sunday of the dangers of running out of wheat due to the decline in stocks of this basic food item in Iraq.
Al-Sudani said in a statement today, "The quantities marketed to this day are about 300,000 tons, and the quantities expected to be marketed will not exceed 1.5 million tons."
He added that "in the face of this reality, and based on our oversight role in accordance with the constitution and the law, we explain to the public opinion and the House of Representatives one of the most important forms of failure in government performance in the most important service and living files for citizens, which are related to the ration card and the strategic storage required for wheat."
Al-Sudani continued by saying that "there are poor neighboring countries, compared to Iraq's financial resources, that have a strategic stockpile of wheat ranging between 6-9 months, while Iraq today does not possess in its treasury of wheat only 300,000 tons, knowing that the quota set for preparing citizens of flour per month is 450 thousand tons.
On Saturday, the Iraqi politician, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, considered that the Iraqi people were heading towards "starvation" in light of government reports talking about the existence of a strategic stockpile of the wheat crop that sufficed for only 3 weeks, and while he indicated that contracting to purchase new quantities of this substance takes two months to complete. At the very least, he stressed that this matter fluctuates between "government neglect and the opening of a new door to corruption."
In a statement yesterday, Saturday, the Ministry of Commerce reassured the population that the ministry's stockpile of wheat is good and is constantly rising as a result of the marketing season and the ministry's plan to import the grain crop.
Last February, the Iraqi economic expert, Dargham Muhammad Ali, warned in a statement to Shafak News Agency that Iraq will be affected by the rise in wheat prices globally against the background of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
