After the Iraqi parliament granted confidence to the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, after a year of political stalemate in the country, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union welcomed the formation of the new government on Friday.
A Guterres spokesman said in a statement that the United Nations remained fully committed to supporting Iraq, and urged the new government to fulfill "the Iraqi people's long-held demands for reform, accountability and a better future."
In turn, European Union Foreign Affairs Representative Josep Borrell congratulated Sudan's government on gaining confidence, considering it an "important step towards achieving stability in the country."
"A balanced foreign policy"
He also stressed that the union looks forward to working closely with the new government and supporting the implementation of the announced reform program and the fight against corruption.
He pointed out that the prime minister's commitment to a balanced foreign policy and good relations with all of Iraq's neighbors "opens positive prospects for the future," stressing that the union will continue to support his country, its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Giving confidence to the government
It is noteworthy that yesterday, Thursday, Parliament granted confidence to the Sudanese government after presenting its ministerial program, which obtained an absolute majority by voting.
Al-Sudani (52 years), a governor and former minister from the traditional Shiite political class, was assigned on 13 October to form the government by the new President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, immediately after his election.
