Representative from Dhi Qar province, Hassan al-Asadi, confirmed on Thursday that poverty in the south of the province has become dominant over the population, indicating that 60 percent of the marsh residents live below the poverty line.
Al-Asadi said in a press statement, "The poverty rate in the areas of southern Nasiriyah exceeded the threshold of 60%, while poverty in the entire governorate exceeded 40%."
He added that "the deterioration of the economic sector is one of the main reasons behind the high rate of poverty in the marshes," stressing that "the people of the marshes depend heavily on hunting and animal husbandry, so it is necessary to provide the necessary support to save the marshes."
Al-Asadi pointed out that "about 60 percent of the people living in the marshes have fallen into poverty this year."
