    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday, economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi revealed the value of Iranian gas debts owed to Iraq, noting that domestic production only meets 43%.
Al-Marsoumi said in a post on Facebook, followed by (Baghdad Today), that “Iranian gas debts to Iraq amount to 10 billion dollars, and Iraq imports about 6 to 7 billion tons annually, at a value of 4 billion dollars annually. "
He explained that "these figures are due to the shortage in Iraqi gas production, which only meets 43% of domestic consumption."
The electricity sector in Iraq relies on a large part of its needs on Iranian gas to provide fuel for power plants. As supplies dwindled, at many times over the past year, the crisis of power outages escalated.
During the past months, Iraq faced several crises as a result of the decline in Iranian gas supplies, with Tehran reducing pumping operations due to the presence of debts owed by the Baghdad government.
The non-payment of Iranian gas dues in 2020 by Iraq led to a reduction in the volume of imports to 8.5 million cubic meters per day, out of 50 million during the winter, and 70 million cubic meters in the summer, which caused the electricity system to lose about 7,500 megawatts.
The Ministry of Electricity worked, during the last period, to settle the crisis. And the re-pumping of Iranian gas, which rose to about 20 million cubic meters per day, but supplies fell again with the increase in demand locally in Tehran.
