The Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee decided to host the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Fadel, in its upcoming meetings to discuss the ministry's contracts and the recent memorandums of understanding with the German companies Siemens and the American General Electric.
A statement by the parliamentary media department stated that the committee "held its first meeting today, chaired by the committee's chairman, Muhammad Abd Rabbo, and in the presence of its members, and voted inside its headquarters on its sub-committees and the distribution of members to them."
The committee also discussed, according to the statement, "the two memorandums of understanding with the German (Siemens) company and the American General Electric company, where the committee decided to host the Minister of Electricity in this regard, and to review the merits of the file."
The statement indicated that “the committee also discussed the draft law of the first amendment to the Ministry of Electricity Law No. 53 of 2017, and made observations related to it, as the interventions of the committee members included an emphasis on the need to include it, and to ripen its paragraphs for the benefit of citizens.
On the other hand, the committee stressed "the importance of working on a renewable energy project, through solar energy, waste recycling, etc., and reducing dependence on burning fossil fuels to reduce carbon emissions, starting with oil energy."
And they agreed "to set up a workshop with the ministries of electricity and oil and to face the challenges."
The Electricity Committee also decided, at the end of its meeting, to "send an official letter to the Presidency of the House of Representatives regarding the Diwani Order Committee No. (61) of 2019."
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Electricity signed, on January 13, a joint memorandum of understanding with Siemens, and on February 16, it signed a similar memorandum with the American General Electric / GE, within the framework of the government program that aims to develop the electricity sector in Iraq.
