Hamila Kurdi, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of RT Bank, said that the suspension of selling dollars at the central bank rate in the Erbil and Dohuk branches was due to “counterfeiting” and not due to a shortage of dollars, noting that the United States is investigating those who receive dollars and do not travel.

Kurdi stated, in an interview with Kurdish media affiliated with "Nass" (February 22, 2023), that "at first they had real buyers for dollars, but after selling dollars to tourists increased, the amount reached 7 thousand dollars, and a case of fraud arose."
And she added, "The US government and the Central Bank of Iraq realize that people get dollars in the name of tourism and do not travel, so the United States follows through the serial number on the dollar the place of currency exchange."
According to the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of RT Bank, "If someone gets dollars in cash in the name of tourism and does not spend them in the country to which he travels and returns them to Iraq or the region, he will face problems," adding that "the names of those who did not travel will be submitted to Interpol within 30 days."
Kurdi said, "People are not aware of the dangers of buying dollars in the name of travel, and that one of the problems they face is related to their passports," noting that "some offices and wealthy people send people to buy dollars."
