The Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, confirmed today, Thursday, that next summer will be different in terms of energy production, and there is a tendency to sign an agreement with Iran to secure the stations’ need for gas, revealing at the same time the volume of current production and the quantities expected to be produced according to the agreements concluded with Siemens and General Electric. .
Fadel said in a televised interview, followed by Mawazine News, that "our production capacity is currently around 15,600 megawatts, and the power supply in Iraq is currently high, reaching 18 hours a day."
He added, "We need 35,000 megawatts of energy to supply 24 hours of electricity to citizens in the coming summer, which will be different. We are preparing to sign an agreement with Iran to secure the quantities of gas required for the summer and provide them, which will add 7,000 megawatts to the system."
He continued, "The lack of fuel prevents the addition of 5,000 megawatts to the system, although all its units are ready, and energy losses in slums throughout Iraq may reach 20%."
Regarding the current agreements with international companies to increase production, Fadhel explained, "The cabinet turned the memorandums of understanding with Siemens and General Electric into a project plan for the year 2023 according to the first and second phases.
He pointed out that "Siemens will implement projects producing 1,400 megawatts in Baiji and 600 megawatts in Dhi Qar as a first stage, and General Electric will implement other projects producing 3,000 megawatts, which means producing 5,000 megawatts out of 10,000 megawatts, representing the current shortage in production."
He stressed that "we agreed with the two companies to add new units to work while continuing to maintain the current operating units that they implemented earlier to ensure the stability of their work, and we obliged the two companies to prepare studies for the investment of associated gas in energy production."
