The World Bank calls on Baghdad to address the problems of climate change

The World Bank called for bridging the development gap in Iraq and creating a society that addresses the problems and consequences of climate change, explaining that the delay in development may endanger social stability and prospects for economic development.
"The Iraqi government is aware today more than ever of the seriousness of environmental problems surrounding the country," Salim Rouhana, the bank's sustainable development program official, told Al-Sabah. .
Rouhana added, "Iraq has gone through exceptional circumstances during the last stage, but it has become more aware of the dangers of climate change, which are actually linked to the structural problems of the structural and developmental economy."
The Climate and Development Report for Iraq, issued by the World Bank in November 2022, indicated that Baghdad would need investments worth about $233 billion by 2040 to be able to bridge priority development gaps and embark on a comprehensive green growth path.
The report determined the order of priorities and sequence of these investments in a manner that takes into account the urgent need for them, their synergy, and the comparison between them.
According to the report, the safe measures recommended in the first five years (starting from 2022) provide Iraq with an opportunity to meet its development needs and lay the foundations for climate action while achieving a low-carbon transformation that benefits at a relatively low economic cost, as the report suggested measures in the short and medium term for the ten years. future efforts to build economic and social resilience and set a path for a greener transition.
