{Politics: Al Furat News} The US State Department announced that the Sultanate of Oman has expressed its readiness to receive part of Iran's money deposited in Iraqi banks, stressing that the US administration believes that it is important to get these funds out of Iraq.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a press conference on Monday that "Oman has expressed its willingness to receive part of Iran's money deposited in Iraqi banks," adding: "We expect this to happen. We believe this is an important step."
He stressed that the US administration believes that it is important to get this money out of Iraq," he said.
He added: This money will be kept in a fund or account in the Sultanate of Oman, but it will then remain subject to the same restrictions that were applied to it when the money was kept in accounts in Iraq, which means that the money can only be used for non-sanctionable activities such as humanitarian assistance, and that all transactions need to be approved by the US Treasury in advance.
And the United States confirmed last Wednesday that it issued a new exemption, the twentieth of its kind, to allow Iraq to pay the value of electricity imports to Iranian accounts registered in the Iraqi Trade Bank.
"The only thing different about this exemption is that this latest package expands the exemption to allow the transfer of funds from those restricted accounts in Iraq to restricted accounts and selected offshore banks," the State Department said.
"The other terms of this transaction are the same as previous transactions, which is that these funds will remain in accounts that can only be used for non-sanctionable activity and each transaction must be approved by the Treasury Department," she added.
