Today, Friday, the Ministry of Agriculture clarified its plan to confront water scarcity, while announcing the success of investing in groundwater to cultivate desert areas.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad al-Khuzai, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, followed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the ministry's plans to address the problem of water scarcity are represented by the exploitation of desert lands, depending on the large amount of groundwater that this desert enjoys."
Al-Khuzaie added, "Iraq is one of the countries that has the most groundwater, and it does not suffer from any problem in this aspect, so desert lands and expansion in them were a solution to address the shrinking of agricultural plans for lands that are irrigated directly by the waters of rivers."
And he continued: "The evidence is that the winter cultivation plan for the wheat crop was represented by the cultivation and coverage of 4 million dunums of desert lands, according to the agricultural support plans provided by the Ministry of Agriculture with regard to providing fertilizers, seeds and pesticides in full to farmers and farmers."
He pointed out that "the results were joyful, and through desert lands and agricultural lands that are irrigated with river water, they reached a stage of self-sufficiency in the wheat crop, with a number of more than 5 million."
