Director of the Retirement and Social Security Department for Workers, affiliated with the Ministry, Kholoud Hiran Al-Jabri, said: “The law will enter into force on the twenty-eighth of November of this year, that is, three months after the date of its publication in the Iraqi newspaper Al-Waqa’i last August.”
She stressed "the necessity of concerted efforts and working hard to implement it, because of its great importance for the advancement of the working class in society," according to the official newspaper.
In mid-May 2023, the Iraqi Parliament voted on the Social Security Law for workers in the private sector, in a step that the government considered essential within the economic reforms it promised, to guarantee the rights of workers in this sector and to try to attract more labor to it after the great demand for the sector. The government, which put pressure on state institutions and functional laxity.
The First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, stated earlier, during a press conference, that “the law will represent the main element for protecting and guaranteeing workers’ rights, and revitalizing the private sector in which more than 5 million workers work. The law will also ensure the expansion of the umbrella of inclusion by adding... The guarantee branch for voluntary retirement, and the addition of labor service in the government sector for the purposes of bonuses, promotions, and retirement, as well as including a retirement formula that provides psychological and financial stability, ensuring their equality with government retirees.”
Deputy [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, described the law as “one of the most prominent laws, which will constitute an important turning point and a giant step towards strengthening the economic wheel, protecting the segment of workers in the private sector, and guaranteeing their rights on a par with their peers working in the public sector.”
He added, "The law also allows the possibility of purchasing a service for workers who do not have a period of service that qualifies them for retirement, with the ability of any Iraqi to guarantee himself with voluntary retirement. It also guarantees the transfer of the partial disability pension to the successors (heirs) upon the death of the retiree, in addition to granting cost-of-living allowances."
