The Ministry of Environment began work to clear the land of the Nebras petrochemical project in Basra Governorate of mines and military projectiles.
The national economy is awaiting the launch of the Nebras Petrochemical Industries Project, which is considered the largest in the Middle East region, with a production of 1.8 million tons of petrochemical materials and annual profits exceeding 1.4 billion dollars.
Director of the Mine Affairs Department in the ministry, Shawkat Tayeh Masoud, told Al-Sabah: The engineering support teams from the Ministries of Interior, Defense, and the Popular Mobilization Forces, and under the supervision of the department, began clearing the land on which the (Nebras) petrochemical project will be built in Basra Governorate from mines, as well as Conducting technical and non-technical surveys to detect contaminated sites.
He added that the project is located on an area of 4,500 dunums in Al-Zubair district for the benefit of the Ministry of Industry, which has prepared all logistical preparations for the teams participating in the clearing work with the aim of completing the removal work for the purpose of directly implementing the project, which is considered one of the important projects, in addition to the fact that the area falls within the development road project.
Masoud pointed out that the site will be divided into three parts. Each party will be responsible for the removal and disinfection work, while the department will include the cleared sites in its database. He pointed out that contamination by mines and military projectiles is a danger that threatens the lives of citizens, especially in areas close to contaminated sites, where the wars that In the 1980s and 1990s, the country witnessed large areas of pollution, amounting to about 2,100 square kilometers. Basra Governorate is one of the most polluted areas, with a polluted area of 1,100 square kilometers.
Masoud stated that the country, in accordance with international agreements, must be free of mines by the year 2028, noting that the department is currently working in coordination with the General Company for Iraqi Railways and the Italian company (PEG) concerned with preparing the design of the development road to secure the road’s paths from the dangers of mines and war remnants.
