The White House said that US President Joe Biden spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani on Monday, as part of his efforts to contain the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Biden suddenly canceled a local visit and met with the national security team on Monday, while he was considering an invitation to visit Israel to show support for it in light of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
Biden was scheduled to visit Colorado, but decided at the last minute to remain in the White House to hold these meetings, amid growing fears that the conflict might expand into a broader war in the Middle East.
The White House confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Biden to visit Israel after the Hamas attack, classified as terrorist, on October 7, which resulted in more than 1,400 deaths, but he said that there is no plan to travel yet.
The timing of any visit will be extremely sensitive as Israel prepares for a ground operation in the Gaza Strip after strikes and air strikes that left at least 2,750 people dead.
The White House said that Biden and US Vice President Kamala Harris “were informed by the national security team of the latest developments after the hateful Hamas attack in Israel and the resulting conflict in Gaza.”
He added that the briefing was led by the Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, Bill Burns, the Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines, and the National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, who was joined by Biden's Office Director, Jeff Zaints, and published a photo of the meeting in the Oval Office on social media. Social Media.
This comes as several American media outlets, including Axios and CNN, reported that American and Israeli officials are discussing the possibility of Biden traveling to Israel this week.
Biden, 80, was scheduled to travel to Colorado to visit a wind turbine factory and promote economic recovery and pro-environmental messages as part of his 2024 election campaign.
Canceling the visit at the last minute is unusual, especially since presidential trips are usually carefully planned, and was so surprising that White House officials had only hours before published details about the Colorado visit.
Biden has repeatedly pledged to provide strong support for Israel, a close ally of the United States, in its response to the attack launched by Hamas, on October 7, from Gaza, which led to the death of more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians.
Israel, which witnessed the bloodiest attack in its history, launched strikes on the Gaza Strip that killed at least 2,750 people, most of them civilians, and caused great destruction.
Fears are increasing about the possibility of the Lebanese Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran like Hamas, entering the confrontation line, with some skirmishes taking place on the northern border of Israel.
