    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (November 5, 2023), Minister of Agriculture Abbas al-Maliki discussed with the Turkish Ambassador to Baghdad, Ali Reda Kony, the water issue and the decrease in water releases.
A statement from the ministry received by “Baghdad Today” stated, “The Minister of Agriculture received, today, in his office, the Turkish Ambassador to Baghdad, Ali Reda Kony, and his accompanying delegation,” indicating that “the file of agricultural relations between the two friendly countries and the prospects for developing them in various fields were reviewed in the meeting.”
The minister stressed, according to the statement, “the depth of the ties between Iraq and Turkey, which require cooperation and understanding on all issues, including the water file,” adding, “We want these relations to grow and prosper despite the difficulties that exist regarding the harsh climatic variables and the water scarcity crisis that Iraq suffers from, which has had a negative impact.” Its agricultural situation requires the friendly Turkish side to understand Iraq’s water needs and increase water releases to the limits of five hundred cubic meters per second, as the Turkish Foreign Minister promised in his recent visit to Baghdad.”
In the field of rationalizing and rationing water consumption, Al-Maliki explained that “what the Ministry has done is to include the funds required to purchase more than thirteen thousand sprinklers from various international origins to preserve the wealth of water and use the best methods to make the most of it.”
For his part, the Turkish ambassador expressed his "great pride in the continuous communication with the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture," considering it "the most important criterion on which Iraqi-Turkish relations are based," according to the statement.
He also expressed "Turkey's readiness to cooperate with Iraq on the water issue, attributing the reason for the decrease in water releases from the Turkish side to the phenomenon of global warming that Turkey, Iraq and other countries in the region are suffering from. Ambassador Kony also expressed his satisfaction with the programs to shift towards modern irrigation methods, with which Iraq has come a long way." During the life of this ministry.
In conclusion, the Minister of Agriculture presented a unified agricultural calendar proposal with the Turkish side to exchange the export of agricultural crops between the two sides in case of abundance, similar to the quadripartite memorandum of understanding that brought together Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, in addition to sending an invitation to the participation of Turkish companies in the agricultural exhibition held by the Ministry of Agriculture at the beginning of the year. Next year".
The statement indicated that "the two parties agreed to exchange visits and exchange experiences in the fields of water and modern agricultural methods in a way that benefits the agricultural situation in the two neighboring countries."
