Shafaq News/ Today, Sunday, Jordan and Iraq signed the first amendment document to the contract for the sale of electrical energy to supply the Iraqi side with electrical energy at a voltage of 132 kilovolts to feed the Rutba region’s loads estimated at about 40 megawatts.
The document was signed on the Jordanian side by the Director General of the National Electricity Company, Amjad Al-Rawashdeh, and on the Iraqi side by the Director-General of the General Electric Power Transmission Company/Central Region, Riyad Uraibi, in charge, in the presence of officials from both parties.

Al-Rawashdeh said in a press statement following the signing that the agreement comes within the framework of the aspiration of the Jordanian and Iraqi sides to begin establishing the joint synchronous electrical interconnection, which will contribute to enhancing the exchange of electrical energy and stabilizing the electrical systems on both sides, which will be a major part of the joint Arab energy market in the future.
He added, "Now we have completed all the technical procedures for the first phase, and the Iraqi side is now ready to receive electricity. Work will be done to complete some banking procedures between the two parties in preparation for starting to supply the Iraqi side with about 40 megawatts within the first phase, while work is currently underway to prepare the second phase, which is expected to take place during the third quarter." From the current year.
Al-Rawashda continued, saying that after the completion of the second phase, the total capacity that will be supplied to Iraq will be about 150-200 megawatts, and with the development of the connection stages in the medium term, the amount of supply could reach 500 megawatts.
The two sides had signed a memorandum of understanding on 12/29/2018 between the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, with the aim of the two sides seeking cooperation in the field of electricity and establishing a simultaneous electrical interconnection network between the two countries.
Also, on September 27, 2020, a contract for the sale of electrical energy was signed between the National Electricity Company and the General Energy Transmission Company / Central Region to provide the Iraqi side with electrical capacity ranging between 150-200 MW, in addition to the signing of the mechanism for implementing the Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project between The National Electricity Company and the General Energy Transmission Company / Central Region on 7/15/2021, through the establishment of a 400 kV overhead transmission line as a first stage linking the Al-Risha substation on the Jordanian side and the Al-Qaim substation on the Iraqi side, with a length of 6 km in Jordanian territory and 330 How many in Iraqi territory?
The foundation stone for the Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project was laid on 10/6/2022 under the patronage of Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh and Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
It is noteworthy that the second phase of the project will be the completion of the synchronous electrical connection at a voltage of 400 KV. Which will require completing the electrical network reinforcements on both sides.
Iraq has been suffering from a chronic electricity shortage for decades as a result of the siege and successive wars. Residents have been protesting for many years against the frequent power outages, especially in the summer, when temperatures sometimes reach 50 degrees Celsius.
Iraq is holding discussions with Gulf countries, led by Saudi Arabia, to import electricity from them by linking its organization with the Gulf system, after it had relied on Iran alone during the past years by importing 1,200 megawatts as well as gas fuel to feed local electric power stations.
Iraq also intends to import electricity from Jordan and Turkey, in an effort by Baghdad to fill the shortage until power stations are built that are able to meet local consumption.
