The National Investment Authority began the procedures for implementing the waste treatment project to generate energy in Baghdad, while indicating that the project will include the rest of the governorates.
The Authority’s deputy, Salar Muhammad, said in a press conference held at the Authority’s headquarters to announce the investment opportunity to treat waste and produce electrical energy in the Nahrawan area: “Today we announce the opening of bids submitted to implement the waste treatment project to generate energy in the capital, Baghdad, with the encouragement and personal follow-up of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa.” Al-Sudani,” indicating that “the waste treatment project to generate energy was adopted, as a ministerial committee was formed headed by the National Investment Commission and the membership of the Ministry of Environment and the Municipality of Baghdad in order to keep pace with cultural development and scientific renaissance in the world and the region in particular in the sector of renewable, sustainable and clean energies.”
Muhammad stressed “the importance of this civilized project, the first of its kind in Iraq, from the health, environmental, and societal aspects that have a direct connection to the daily life of the Iraqi citizen,” pointing out that “the project will operate with a fourth-generation network complete incineration system that raises the waste at a rate of three thousand tons per day of the amount of waste.” In Baghdad, which amounts to more than 10 thousand tons per day, this waste generates a high percentage of environmental pollutants that directly affect the health of the Iraqi citizen.”
He explained that "the project is receiving the attention of the government, the Authority, and the supporting bodies because of its significant positive effects on citizen health, reducing the need for hospitals, and preserving land that is constantly depleted in the process of landfilling," explaining that "the process of landfilling waste consumes areas of land and then becomes unusable." "For agriculture." He pointed out that "the waste treatment project will not be limited to Baghdad, but rather this model will be repeated in the remaining governorates," pointing out that "the project is not born today, but is the result of the work of many different committees in the Council of Advisors, the Ministry of Environment, the Municipality of Baghdad, and other relevant government agencies."
