The Radiation Protection Center in the Ministry of Environment works to develop the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
The Director General of the Center, Dr. Sabah Al-Husseini, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “This development comes through expansion in the field of building facilities, research reactors, and nuclear plants for peaceful purposes,” noting that “such measures support the decisions of the 28th COP conference in using clean energy and reducing carbon emissions, as the Center is working to review and update the regulatory requirements for licensing and inspection of nuclear facilities throughout Iraq.” He added, “The Center has completed guidelines for radioactive waste management in accordance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the requirements of the European Union, through Technical cooperation projects with the European Commission with the support and support of international experts in European organizations concerned with monitoring work.” Al-Husseini stated that “Basra Governorate was declared free of radiation after it was the governorate most contaminated with it, following removal procedures for previously identified sites, noting that there are no large contaminated areas in Iraq, but the national cadres worked diligently to remove radioactive contamination in central and southern Iraq, in addition to preparing the national program to treat and remove radioactive contamination throughout Iraq in 2021. The budget was approved by the Council of Ministers at the end of April 2023, and work is underway to address The remaining sites are in the governorates of Nineveh, Anbar, Baghdad, and Salah al-Din, as the number of remaining sites does not exceed 10 throughout Iraq.
